How Big Is a 30 Yard Dumpster?

Picture a container as long as a full-size pickup with a trailer behind it, and taller than most people. The 5.8 ft walls take sheets of drywall, long framing lumber and whole cabinets without cutting everything down, and the extra depth keeps light debris from blowing out on the drive to the landfill.

Because every one of our containers is 7.5 ft wide, the 30 yard is the one where length decides whether it fits. Measure 18 ft of firm, level ground, then add room in front for the truck to line up.

For load planning, tonnage examples and every container compared side by side, see 30 Yard Dumpster Rental.

Projects That Call for a 30 Yard Dumpster

When the debris pile would overflow a 20 yard, one 30 yard is simpler and cheaper than two smaller rentals or a weekend of trips to the transfer station.

  • Whole house gut

Drywall, insulation, flooring, cabinets, doors and trim from a house taken down to the studs.

  • New construction

Framing scraps, sheathing offcuts, packaging and drywall waste through framing and rough-in.

  • Estate cleanouts

House, basement, garage and shed cleared in one container instead of several.

  • Large roof tear-offs

Roughly 18 to 24 squares of asphalt shingles fit inside the included weight.

  • Commercial clear outs

Desks, shelving, fixtures, carpet and ceiling tile from offices, stores and build outs.

  • Barn, shed and deck demo

Lumber, siding, metal roofing and posts, as long as concrete footings stay out.

Choosing a size

30 Yard or 20 Yard Dumpster?

The 30 yard holds about 4 more pickup loads and 2,000 more pounds than a 20 yard, for $75 more on a 3-day rental, and it is about 2 ft longer and 1 ft taller.

Book the 30 when the job is measured in rooms plus a garage, or in whole floors. Stay with a 20 when the driveway is short, the job is one or two rooms, or the debris is mostly heavy material that would hit the weight limit long before the container is full.

Weight and tonnage

How Much Weight a 30 Yard Holds

3 tons (6,000 lb) is included. Past that you pay $0.07 per pound, based on the disposal facility's scale ticket, up to a 5 ton (10,000 lb) maximum load. Most remodel and cleanout debris fills the container by volume before it reaches the weight limit.

Worked example: gutting a 1,500 sq ft ranch

Drywall, insulation, flooring, cabinets and trim from a house that size often weigh around 7,000 lb. That is 1,000 lb over the allowance, so 1,000 lb x $0.07 = $70, and the 3-day total comes to $535.

Drop zone

Where to Put a 30 Yard Dumpster

Long driveways, side pads, open lots and job sites are ideal. On a short driveway, a city-permitted street spot or a 20 yard may be the better fit. Placement on private property needs no permit; any street, curb lane or sidewalk placement needs a permit from your city, and arranging it is the customer's responsibility.

Lay plywood under the rails if you want to protect a finished driveway, and keep the spot clear on delivery day so the driver can set it on the first try.

Site checklist

  • Measure 18 ft of length plus the truck's approach
  • Check overhead for wires, eaves and branches
  • Move trailers, vehicles and material piles out of the path
  • Mark septic lids, meters and sprinkler heads
  • Use firm ground; avoid soft fill after heavy rain

Questions and answers

30 Yard Dumpster Rental FAQ

How much does a 30 yard dumpster cost in Kansas City?

A 30 yard dumpster rental is $465 for 3 days. Rentals run from $465 to $965 depending on length (1, 3, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days). Every rate includes delivery, pickup, disposal and 3 tons (6,000 lb) of debris. Extra days are $25 each.

What are the dimensions of a 30 yard dumpster?

Our 30 yard roll off is about 18 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 5.8 feet tall. It holds 30 cubic yards, roughly 12 pickup truck loads. It is the same width as our smaller containers, so length is the measurement that decides whether it fits your spot.

How much weight can a 30 yard dumpster hold?

3 tons (6,000 lb) is included in the price. Weight past that is billed at $0.07 per pound from the disposal facility's scale ticket. The maximum safe load is 5 tons (10,000 lb), so heavy material like concrete, dirt and brick belongs in a concrete dumpster instead.

What fits in a 30 yard dumpster?

About 12 pickup loads: the debris from gutting a house to the studs, a full estate cleanout including the garage and shed, new construction framing waste, a large office clear out, or roughly 18 to 24 squares of asphalt shingles within the included weight.

Should I rent a 20 yard or a 30 yard dumpster?

Choose the 30 when the job is a full house gut, new construction, a large roof or an estate with outbuildings. It holds about 4 more pickup loads and 2,000 more pounds than a 20 yard for $75 more. Choose a 20 when your driveway is short or the project is one or two rooms.

Will a 30 yard dumpster fit in my driveway?

Plan for a firm, level area about 18 by 7.5 feet, plus room in front for the roll off truck to line up, and nothing overhead such as wires, eaves or branches. Long driveways, side pads, open lots and job sites work best.

Can I get a 30 yard dumpster delivered the same day?

Yes. Same-day delivery is available across the Kansas City metro when a 30 yard is open and you order early enough in the day, with no rush fee. Book online to see open delivery times, or call 816-920-0291 to check same-day availability.

How long can I keep a 30 yard dumpster?

You can book 1, 3, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days. Delivery day counts as day 1. Need more time? Add days for $25 each. Have the container ready for pickup by noon on the last day.

Do I need a permit for a 30 yard dumpster in Kansas City?

Not on private property such as a driveway, yard or job site lot. Placement on a street, curb lane or sidewalk needs a permit from your city, and getting that permit is the customer's responsibility. Each city in the metro sets its own process and fee.

Is delivery included in the price?

Yes. Delivery and the final haul are included for job sites within 30 road miles of our Independence yard. Past that, it is $3 per extra mile, counted going and coming back on delivery and pickup.

What cannot go in a 30 yard dumpster?

Paint, stain and solvents, fuel, oil and other fluids, batteries, propane and pressurized cylinders, asbestos, and medical or biohazard waste are not accepted. Refrigerators, air conditioners, tires and TVs are accepted for a set per-item fee. Tell us about fee items before pickup.

Do you deliver 30 yard dumpsters on the Kansas side?

Yes. We deliver across the Missouri and Kansas sides of the metro, including Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, Leawood and Mission, plus Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Liberty and the Northland.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Cancel more than 24 hours before delivery at no charge. A cancellation inside 24 hours carries a $50 fee because the truck and container are already scheduled for you.

Who provides the 30 yard dumpsters?

Rent 30 Yard Dumpster is a locally owned Kansas City roll off service. We run our own trucks and containers from an Independence, MO yard and answer the phone 24/7.
